THE GREAT PHYSICIAN
Health Helps Part 2
By Dane and Vicki Griffin
Did you realize that true
science, the Bible, and common sense will always be in
agreement? This is because God is the author of them all!
The Bible is different
The Bible, as God’s Owner’s Manual, is entirely different
from other books which give good advice. There are three reasons
for this:
1. The sacred books of other religions describe man’s concepts
about God. But in the Bible, God talks to us personally about
Himself and His plan for us. “All Scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness [right living]:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all
good works.”1
2. In the Bible, God Himself gives us personal, loving
instructions for happier, healthier lives. He says, “I will
instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I
will guide thee with Mine eye.”2 He is no cold, heartless
Being who makes a set of rules and then sits back to see which
of the lowly bipeds He has created can manage to figure out how
to follow them! No, a personal God wrote a personal Owner’s
Manual for the subjects of His love and grace.
3. God’s Word has power. Mencius, a Chinese sage, said, “Instruction
can impart knowledge, but not the power to execute.” That’s
true for every book but the Bible. The Word of God not only
gives instruction but promises power to obey!3
The Great Physician
When the Jewish nation tried to find worldly solutions instead
of asking God for His answers, Jeremiah asked them, “Is there
no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?”4
Jeremiah wanted the people to understand that they did have a
Great Physician. They simply refused to consult Him! That Great
Physician is none other than Jesus.5 And He wants to commune
with you—to give you instructions for living, and the power to
carry them out!
Waiting room
Have you ever hurried to be on time for a doctor’s
appointment, rushing through traffic, sprinting across the
parking lot, and squeezing through the crowd in the waiting room
to write your name on the list? You made it on time—but where
was the doctor? You hurried, and then you waited—and waited—and
waited some more. An hour later a nurse ushered you into a
cubicle and asked you many questions. After another wait, the
physician breezed in, spent a few minutes with you, and rushed
out to see the next patient. In spite of that, your interview
with the doctor was probably rather expensive.
No appointment necessary!
The Great Physician has a different approach. You don’t have
to wait to visit with Him, and He never looks at His watch. You
have His undivided attention—does He have yours? He says, “Come
now, and let us reason together.”6 He wants you to think about
your relationship with Him and He wants you to look at the way
your life is going. In love, He gives information on how you can
have the best possible life—as well as warnings of what will
happen if you make unwise choices.
Best of all, the Great Physician’s services are free!
